Ultrasound has been safely used in Obstetrics since the mid-1970s but it has been only recently that ultrasound has developed to be both of high image quality and affordable to the Midwife.
There are two basic styles of ultrasound imaging systems available today: (1) portable in a tabletop or laptop style and (2) full floor console style.
The portable styles are particularly good if going from room to room or building to building is important, as they generally may be carried by hand.
The full floor console units are good if the system will largely remain in one room.
Choices for OB Ultrasound systems for Midwives include:
Tabletop/Laptop Style Ultrasound System (with Pulsed Doppler for Audible Heart-tones)
These systems have 15-17" tiltable monitors and have good image quality.
They have full Gestational Age calculations available and also FHR and AFI Calcs.
The systems weigh about 15-17 lbs and have battery backups.
These systems may be leased to own starting at $149/mo.
Tabletop/Laptop Style Ultrasound System (with Pulsed and Color Doppler)
The extra feature of Color Doppler allows for umbilical cord visualization.
These systems may be leased to own starting at $199/mo.
Full Floor Console Ultrasound System (with Pulsed and Color Doppler)
These systems have 19-21" full swivel monitors and full console Control Panels.
Floor Console systems also have higher resolution and ability to see deeper, particularly valuable for late term pregnancies.
They tend to be a bit easier to use (e.g., bigger control panel buttons) and usually have digital outputs to large auxiliary monitors for easy viewing by patients and family member.
These systems may be leased to own starting at $389/mo.
All our systems include an abdominal probe. Abdominal probes are can be used for first trimester scanning though they are best for 2nd and 3rd trimester scanning, dating and AFI calculations. Vaginal probes are optional and are best used for fetal viability and first trimester scanning.
Other optional items include custom mobile carts with hangers for probes and thermal printers for easy prints to hand out to pregnant moms or for their files.
Speaking of files, all systems come with simple digital storage capability and easy transfer of images by flash drive.
